        "content": "<p>ICMI to discuss civil servants at congress<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Next month&apos;s congress of the Indonesian Moslem<br>\nIntellectuals Association (ICMI) will discuss various current<br>\npolitical issues.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The ICMI congress will scrutinize the attitudes of government<br>\nofficials and economic policies,&quot; Adi Sasono, the director of the<br>\nCenter for Information and Development Studies (CIDES), ICMI&apos;s<br>\nthink tank, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters during a one-day seminar, International<br>\nDialog on Human Rights, Adi said the three-day congress, which<br>\nwill begin Dec. 7, is expected to come up with proposals on<br>\nconsistency among officials.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Government officials should be consistent in what they do and<br>\nsay,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Adi said the ICMI congress also will discuss Indonesia&apos;s<br>\neconomic problems.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We need a fair economic policy. We cannot rely upon the<br>\nsympathy of conglomerates for solutions to economic problems,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Adi denied allegations that ICMI has been dabbling in<br>\npolitics.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have no intention of entering practical politics,&quot; he<br>\nsaid. &quot;We provide viewpoints for the country&apos;s decision makers<br>\nthrough seminars and publications.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>ICMI&apos;s second congress will elect a chairman for the 1995-2000<br>\nperiod. Established in 1991, the association enjoys the support<br>\nof an impressive lineup of people, from President Soeharto, who<br>\nchairs its board of patrons, to cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n<p>As early as August, support began to pour in for the re-<br>\nelection of incumbent chairman B.J. Habibie, who is also the<br>\nstate minister of research and technology.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the congress, ICMI plans to hold a book<br>\nexhibition on Islam and Technology, on Dec. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinator for the four-day exhibition, Upi Tuty Sundari,<br>\nsaid 40 local and foreign book publishers will take part.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is also expected bring the &quot;book donation&quot;<br>\nprogram to a climax this year. The target is 5.7 million copies<br>\nthis year. &quot;Last year the program managed to collect one million<br>\nbooks,&quot; she said. (anr\/imn)<\/p>",
