ICMI to discuss civil servants at congress<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Next month's congress of the Indonesian Moslem
\nIntellectuals Association (ICMI) will discuss various current
\npolitical issues.<\/p>\n
"The ICMI congress will scrutinize the attitudes of government
\nofficials and economic policies," Adi Sasono, the director of the
\nCenter for Information and Development Studies (CIDES), ICMI's
\nthink tank, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters during a one-day seminar, International
\nDialog on Human Rights, Adi said the three-day congress, which
\nwill begin Dec. 7, is expected to come up with proposals on
\nconsistency among officials.<\/p>\n
"Government officials should be consistent in what they do and
\nsay," he said.<\/p>\n
Adi said the ICMI congress also will discuss Indonesia's
\neconomic problems.<\/p>\n
"We need a fair economic policy. We cannot rely upon the
\nsympathy of conglomerates for solutions to economic problems," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Adi denied allegations that ICMI has been dabbling in
\npolitics.<\/p>\n
"We have no intention of entering practical politics," he
\nsaid. "We provide viewpoints for the country's decision makers
\nthrough seminars and publications."<\/p>\n
ICMI's second congress will elect a chairman for the 1995-2000
\nperiod. Established in 1991, the association enjoys the support
\nof an impressive lineup of people, from President Soeharto, who
\nchairs its board of patrons, to cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n
As early as August, support began to pour in for the re-
\nelection of incumbent chairman B.J. Habibie, who is also the
\nstate minister of research and technology.<\/p>\n
In conjunction with the congress, ICMI plans to hold a book
\nexhibition on Islam and Technology, on Dec. 3.<\/p>\n
Coordinator for the four-day exhibition, Upi Tuty Sundari,
\nsaid 40 local and foreign book publishers will take part.<\/p>\n
The exhibition is also expected bring the "book donation"
\nprogram to a climax this year. The target is 5.7 million copies
\nthis year. "Last year the program managed to collect one million
