ICMI grooming Moslem 'cadres'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Indonesian Moslem
\nIntellectuals (ICMI) has no immediate plans to establish social
\nservice institutions, such as schools and hospitals, its chairman
\nB.J. Habibie says.<\/p>\n
Habibie said on Friday night that the ICMI was a forum for
\nMoslem intellectuals to exchange ideas and views and was more
\nconcerned with human resources development.<\/p>\n
He made the remarks to reporters shortly after he, in his
\ncapacity as state minister of research and technology, addressed
\nthe congress of the Muhammadiyah in Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
Muhammadiyah is one of Indonesia's largest Moslem
\norganizations. In its 83 years it has established hundreds of
\nschools as well as higher education institutes and hospitals.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the ICMI, a relative newcomer, planned to expand
\nits activities in the same way as Muhammadiyah, Habibie said his
\norganization was more concerned with grooming Indonesia's Moslem
\n\"cadres\" for the challenges of development.<\/p>\n
He said that many in Muhammadiyah had joined the ICMI, as had
\nthinkers from other organizations, including the ruling political
\ngroup Golkar.<\/p>\n
\"Take Amien Rais from Muhammadiyah and Thohir from Golkar,\" he
\nsaid. \"They are founding members and have executive positions in
\nthe ICMI.\" (emb)<\/p>",
