ICAC to construct new building in Lebak Bulus<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta's International Community Activity
\nCenter (ICAC) stepped ahead in its plan to move from its current
\nrented building into a new building.<\/p>\n
It held a ground-breaking ceremony yesterday for the
\nconstruction of its new three-story building in Lebak Bulus,
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
ICAC chairperson, Sarah Robson, said the 2000-square-meter
\nbuilding would contain a youth center, shop, library, dance room,
\noutside stage, instructional kitchens and classrooms.<\/p>\n
Construction was expected to be completed in March 1999 with
\nthe organization leasing it for 20 years, Robson said.<\/p>\n
Robson said the project was located at a peaceful and
\nstrategic place at the Bona Vista apartment complex, near the
\nouter-ring-road and easily accessible from Kemang and Pondok
\nIndah, the city's international schools, major malls, hospitals
\nand other expatriate residences.<\/p>\n
Bona Vista apartment is owned by Bonauli Group, an investment
\nand real estate developer.<\/p>\n
\"We consider the location perfect. It meets our needs,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Cosmas Batubara, president of Bonauli Group, said he attempted
\nto create harmony between expatriates and Indonesians so they
\ncould learn how to live with each other comfortably. \"Bonauli
\nwill provide the building, which was specifically designed to
\nmeet ICAC needs,\" Cosmas said.<\/p>\n
Robson said the youth center would provide teenagers a
\npositive place to meet, as the city was still facing a shortage
\nof recreation facilities for youth.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the center will give teenagers shelter they need. We
\nalso invite Indonesian youngsters to join, too,\" she said.<\/p>\n
ICAC, which currently has 8,000 members, is still open to
\nIndonesians. \"About 25 percent of our members, including staff,
\nare Indonesians,\" said ICAC executive director Mike Reagan.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old club provides a wide variety of programs,
\nincluding counseling, classes and workshops for new expatriates
\nto help them adjust to Jakarta's environment and to help
\nstrengthen cultural ties with the local community.<\/p>\n
\"The club is very beneficial for newcomers to adjust to the
\nnew culture,\" said Georgette Haskin, who has been living in the
\ncountry for the past 35 years.<\/p>\n
For this on-going holiday season, the club is offering more
\nopportunities to enroll in interesting courses.<\/p>\n
