        "content": "<p>IBF has other sponsors<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): International Badminton Federation (IBF) vice<br>\nchairman Justian Suhandinata said yesterday that the federation<br>\nhad an alternative sponsor if Indonesia-based cigarette company,<br>\nPT. HM. Sampoerna, withdrew from the Thomas and Uber Cups<br>\nchampionships in Hong Kong in May.<\/p>\n<p>\"The IBF is optimistic that we can still stage the events on<br>\ntime because we have an alternative if the main sponsor cannot<br>\nfulfill its promise,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"Some Asian countries agreed at the Asian Badminton<br>\nConfederation's executive committee meeting in Manila last week<br>\nto financially help the IBF to stage the event,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Japan, South Korea and China Taipei have agreed to pay for the<br>\nsponsorship boards around the courts.<\/p>\n<p>\"Promoter IMG (International Management Group) will also<br>\nprovide US$5,000,\" Justian said.<\/p>\n<p>It is feared Asia's economic turmoil might force HM. Sampoerna<br>\nto pull out from sponsoring the $1 million event.<\/p>\n<p>Justian said IMG should have submitted a 30 percent down<br>\npayment to the IBF on Jan. 1. But due to the rupiah's<br>\ndepreciation against US dollar, IMG failed to hand over the<br>\nmoney.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that South Korea has been named to replace<br>\nHong Kong as the championships host but that the move would be<br>\ndelayed to January 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Justian said it was impossible to stage the championships in<br>\nEurope due to sponsorship problems and that the IBF had always<br>\nsuffered a deficit when staging the biennial event in Europe.<br>\n(yan)<\/p>",
