        "content": "<p>Deputy Speaker of the People\u2019s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Edhie\nBaskoro Yudhoyono (Ibas) has asserted that Indonesia must not merely\nserve as a market for global technological developments. Instead, the\nnation must become a major player in the global digital transformation\nby strengthening telecommunications infrastructure, data sovereignty,\ncybersecurity, talent development, and collaboration between government,\neducation, and industry. The Chairman of the Democratic Party Faction in\nthe House of Representatives (DPR RI) made these remarks during a public\ndiscussion titled \u2018Smart Indonesia: Accelerating National Digital\nTransformation Through Telecommunications Infrastructure Innovation\u2019 at\nthe MPR RI Complex. The event was attended by telecommunications and\ndigital experts, academics, technology industry players, professional\norganisations, and digital communities from various regions. In his\nopening speech, Ibas emphasised that digital transformation is a\ndecisive factor for Indonesia to realise its ambition of becoming the\nlargest economic power in Southeast Asia. However, he noted that\nsignificant challenges remain, particularly the disparity in access and\nquality of digital services across different parts of Indonesia. \u2018The\nchallenge for us is how we can become the largest economy in Southeast\nAsia. The digital divide as a national challenge is still evident,\u2019 Ibas\nstated. \u2018We want quality internet access that can be enjoyed tangibly so\nthat digital literacy is truly realised.\u2019 Ibas argued that\ntelecommunications infrastructure development must be viewed as a\nlong-term strategic investment. He believes that digital communication\nnetworks now play a role as crucial as physical infrastructure in\ndriving national economic growth. \u2018Telecommunications infrastructure is\nthe backbone of digital communication. Every BTS tower we build, every\nkilometre of fibre optic cable we lay, is a vital investment to support\nIndonesia\u2019s digital transformation,\u2019 said the DPR RI member representing\nthe East Java VII electoral district. Beyond expanding digital access,\nIbas also stressed the importance of strengthening cybersecurity and\npersonal data protection amidst increasing global digital threats. He\nnoted that technological advancement must be balanced with regulations\nand governance capable of safeguarding national interests. \u2018The next\nchallenge is how we anticipate the capabilities of parties who are\nincreasingly skilled and established in conducting cyberattacks. This\nthreat is real and serious,\u2019 Ibas warned. \u2018Therefore, personal data\nprotection and the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law\n(UU PDP) must be a shared concern.\u2019 Furthermore, Ibas highlighted the\nneed for Indonesia to prepare for the next generation of technology. He\nstated that Indonesia must take a strategic position in developing\nfuture technologies, including 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), and\nnational data management. \u2018The future of 5G and preparations towards 6G\nmust be prepared now. Indonesia must not only be a market but must\nbecome an important part of the global digital ecosystem,\u2019 explained the\nDeputy Chairman of the Democratic Party. \u2018Campuses, industry, and\ngovernment must collaborate in research and application so that the\nfuture we aspire to can truly be realised.\u2019 According to Ibas,\nartificial intelligence can also be an important instrument to\naccelerate bureaucratic reform and more effective public services.\nHowever, its implementation must uphold the principles of accountability\nand public interest. \u2018AI can help deliver public services that are\nfaster, cheaper, more transparent, and remain accountable. At the same\ntime, we must strengthen national data and cyber sovereignty through\nstrong governance and regulations that safeguard the nation\u2019s\ninterests,\u2019 he said. Ibas added that Indonesia actually possesses a\nlarge pool of human resources to win the global digital competition.\nTherefore, all stakeholders must ensure that national talents receive\nadequate support. \u2018The MPR feels it has a moral responsibility in the\nnation\u2019s development. We do not lack talent. What we must do is ensure\nthese talents get the support they need so their potential can develop\noptimally,\u2019 he stated. Ibas called on all elements of the nation to view\ndigital transformation as a strategic national agenda requiring courage,\ncollaboration, and a long-term vision. \u2018Digital transformation is not\njust about technology, but about the future of our nation. If we can\nbuild strong infrastructure, produce superior talent, maintain data\nsovereignty, and strengthen national innovation, Indonesia will not only\nbe a user of technology but also a creator and leader in the global\ndigital economy,\u2019 he said. During the discussion session, several\nspeakers shared strategic views on Indonesia\u2019s digital future. Awanio\nCo-Founder and CEO Irfan Yuta Pratama emphasised the importance of\nnational digital sovereignty by providing greater space for local\ntechnology companies to grow. He argued that government technology\nspending should not only be procurement-oriented but also serve as an\ninstrument to build a strong national technology industry. Similarly,\nNoLimit Indonesia Founder and CEO Aqsath Rasyid assessed that Indonesia\nhas great potential to become a technology creator in the Southeast\nAsian region, with the strengthening of digital talent being the key to\nfacing global competition and future narrative wars. Meanwhile,\nMicrosoft Indonesia Director of Government Affairs RR Widyasari\nListyowulan highlighted the importance of building a robust national\ndata ecosystem, including the development of data centres and increasing\nhuman resource capacity.<\/p>",
