Ibrahim Arief, known as Ibam and a former consultant to Education Minister Nadiem Makarim, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Jakarta Corruption Court for his involvement in a corruption case related to the procurement of Chromebooks and CDM devices for the Ministry of Education and Culture. Ibam vehemently denounced the verdict as criminalisation, arguing that the ministry's decision to use Chromebooks was wrongly attributed to him as a mere consultant. The sentence, which includes a Rp500 million fine, is significantly lighter than the prosecutors' demand of 15 years imprisonment and substantial restitution, highlighting potential flaws in the accountability process within government procurement.

“I firmly state once again that this is criminalisation,” said Ibam
after the sentencing hearing at the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta
on Tuesday (12/5/2026). Ibam claimed that the Ministry of Education and
Culture had decided to use Chromebooks on 18 June. He felt that the
blame for this decision was being shifted onto him. “This is as if they
are dumping the ministry’s decision-making error onto me, a single
consultant, after they decided it themselves. How is this not
criminalisation, I ask my fellow colleagues. To me, this is very clear,”
he stated. Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison It is known that Ibam was
sentenced to four years in prison. The judge declared Ibam guilty in the
alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebooks and
CDM. “Declaring the Defendant Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam proven legally
and convincingly guilty of committing the criminal act of corruption
jointly as in the subsidiary indictment,” said the chief judge Purwanto
S Abdullah while reading the verdict at the Corruption Court in Central
Jakarta. “Therefore, imposing a prison sentence on the Defendant Ibrahim
Arief alias Ibam of four years,” added the judge. Ibam was also ordered
to pay a fine of Rp500 million. If the fine is not paid, it will be
replaced with imprisonment for 120 days. The judge stated that Ibam was
guilty of violating Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of the
Corruption Offences Law in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph 1 first
of the old Criminal Code. This verdict is much lower than the
prosecutors’ demand. Previously, Ibam was demanded 15 years in prison, a
fine of Rp1 billion subsidiary 190 days imprisonment. The prosecutors
also demanded that Ibam pay restitution of Rp16.92 billion subsidiary 7
years and 6 months in prison.
",
