\nTony Prabowo to stage Calon Arang<\/p>\n
Composer Tony Prabowo and essayist Goenawan Mohammad are due
\nto collaborate in a contemporary music concert at Taman Ismail
\nMarzuki (TIM) arts center.<\/p>\n
The event, scheduled for August 2006, is expected to include
\nfive compositions, including Pastoral and The King's Witch
\noperettas.<\/p>\n
The concert will involve musicians Joel Sachs and Stephanie
\nGriffin from the United States, choreographer Sen Hea Ha from
\nKorea and Batavia Madrigal Singers conducted by Avip Priatna.<\/p>\n
\"I will turn the text and the music (from Goenawan and Tony
\nrespectively) into a stage play,\" director Yudi Ahmad Tajudin
\ntold a press briefing recently.<\/p>\n
Pastoral, a poem about happiness, will be performed by singers
\nNyak Ina Raseuki and Binu D. Sukarman.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, The King's Witch is a legend about Calon Arang, a
\nwitch from a small village of Girah, Kediri, East Java. Her
\ndaughter, Manjali, cannot find a man to marry because all men are
\nafraid of Calon Arang.<\/p>\n
The angry Calon Arang creates an epidemic that affects the
\nwhole kingdom, which then prompts King Airlangga to assign Empu
\nBharada to defeat the witch.<\/p>\n
The legend is told from the king's point of view. It is
\nbelieved that Calon Arang and the people of Girah had their own
\nversion.<\/p>\n
The presentation attempts to portray another version of the
\nstory about Calon Arang. \"This is not an opera, but rather a
\nmusical concert,\" said Goenawan who wrote the script.<\/p>\n
