IAIN Sunan Kalijaga now university<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: It's official: The former state-run Institute of
\nIslamic Studies (IAIN) Sunan Kalijaga is now the Islamic State
\nUniversity (UIN) of Sunan Kalijaga.<\/p>\n
Minister of National Education Malik Fadjar presided over the
\nname change and new status on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Rector Amin Abdullah said by becoming a university, the new
\ninstitution could hopefully help bridge the divide between those
\nsciences considered exclusively religious and those considered
\nmodern and secular.<\/p>\n
\"This perceived dichotomy must be ended because it has brought
\nabout a confusion in thought, especially among Muslim
\ncommunities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Science, he said, should be seen as a universal gift from God
\nthat was meant to create a higher civilization and foster more
\nrespect and understanding of human values.<\/p>\n
Previously, under the old name, IAIN had five faculties. With
\nthe new status, UIN has seven faculties -- Adab (literature and
\nculture), Syariah (Islamic law), Dakwah (communication and
\nIslamic propagation), Ushuludin (theology), Tarbiyah (education),
\nand two new faculties of Humaniora (humanities) and Exacta
\n(logic).<\/p>\n
The change was based on Presidential Decree No 50\/2004 issued
