IAIN students oppose intervention<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Some 70 students from Yogyakarta's Sunan
\nKalijaga State Academy of Islamic Studies (IAIN) staged a protest
\nhere on Tuesday, refusing any form of government intervention in
\nthe ongoing election of IAIN's rector.<\/p>\n
Calling themselves members of the Light of Enlightenment Party
\n(Partai Sinchan), the students claimed that the Ministry of
\nReligious Affairs had been intervening in the elections of
\nrectors of several IAINs across the country.<\/p>\n
As an example of intervention, Partai Sinchan coordinator
\nZulkifli cited the elections of IAIN rectors in Medan, North
\nSumatra and Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
"Muhammadiyah cadres were elected rectors in Medan and
\nBanjarmasin, but the ministry, which is currently dominated by
\nNahdlatul Ulama (NU) cadres, installed other figures from the NU
\nfor the posts," said Zulkifli.<\/p>\n
Amin Abdullah, a member of Muhammadiyah's central board, has
\nreportedly received the most votes to lead IAIN's Yogyakarta
\ncampus.<\/p>\n
The protesters, mostly activists of the IAIN's Muhammadiyah
\nStudents Association (IMM), said they would reject any figures
\nappointed by the government to replace those already elected.<\/p>\n
"We must fight any efforts to eliminate democracy on this
\ncampus," said Zulkifli.(23)<\/p>",
