International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi has\nstated that the agency will soon carry out nuclear inspections in Iran,\nfollowing the completion of the first round of peace negotiations\nbetween the United States and Iran. \u201cThe nuclear inspection will be\ncarried out,\u201d Grossi said during a press conference in Japan. According\nto Grossi, the IAEA and Iran are currently discussing the technical\ndetails for implementing the inspection. \u201cWe will soon discuss the\nmechanisms\u2014the dates, procedures, and locations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, however, said his\ncountry has no plans yet to grant access to its nuclear facilities. He\nstated that the matter can only be discussed once the US and Iran have\nreached a final agreement, and there must be concrete steps towards\nlifting sanctions against Iran. On Tuesday, Iran indicated that the IAEA\nwould not be permitted to inspect nuclear facilities that were targeted\nby American and Israeli airstrikes last year. Since its nuclear\nfacilities were bombarded, Iran has not allowed the IAEA to access the\nmost sensitive nuclear sites. The international body was still able to\ninspect several other facilities, but inspections were halted after the\nUS and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February.<\/p>\n
US Vice President JD Vance had previously asserted that Iran had\nagreed to allow IAEA inspectors back into the country. Echoing his\ndeputy, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran had \u201cfully\nagreed\u201d to allow nuclear inspections and also mentioned that the US Navy\nwould no longer blockade the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday, the US and\nIran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU), which includes\na principle agreement to end the war and a roadmap towards a final deal\nwithin 60 days. One of the main issues under discussion is Iran\u2019s\nuranium, which has been enriched to 60 percent. If enriched to 90\npercent, the uranium could be used for a nuclear weapon. \u201cParagraph 8 of\nthis MoU explicitly states that nuclear-related activities will be\nmonitored by the IAEA,\u201d Grossi said. \u201cTherefore, we must carry out an\ninspection. Whether it is the day after tomorrow, in a week, or in ten\ndays, the inspection will be conducted. Of course, with Iran\u2019s consent.\nIf not, there will be another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iran, however, appeared to dismiss Grossi\u2019s statement. Deputy Foreign\nMinister Gharibabadi said that permission for inspections still depends\non the progress of negotiations, particularly regarding the lifting of\nsanctions. \u201cMedia hype cannot be used to impose facts on the ground,\u201d\nGharibabadi wrote on platform X. To date, Iran has not informed the IAEA\nhow much enriched uranium remains after last year\u2019s attacks and has kept\nits storage locations secret. Prior to the Israeli attack on 13 June\n2025, the IAEA estimated that Iran had approximately 440.9 kilograms of\nuranium enriched to 60 percent. If further enriched, this amount is\nbelieved to be sufficient to produce around ten nuclear weapons.
