'I like the scribble in secondhand books'<\/p>\n

\nAfter bringing the reality of life around us to the stage last
\nweek with his latest play marking Teater Mandiri's 33rd
\nanniversary, Putu Wijaya is still going full steam. The ideas
\ncontinue to flow while he indulgges his other passions of reading
\nand writing. Although reluctant to mention his age, Putu was more
\nforthcoming about the books that he enjoys.

What's on your bedside table?<\/p>\n
Now I am reading a collection of selected essays published by
\nHorison. I'm reading it because I want to learn about the
\ndevelopment on the ways of thinking among Indonesian
\nintellectuals in general. What they have in mind is interesting.
\nI am using it to write a series titled Dangdut, now being
\npublished by Suara Merdeka daily in Semarang and in its sixth
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
Author, author -- who is your favorite?<\/p>\n
I don't worship authors, I look more to the works. But the
\nworks of (Yukio) Mishima, (Ryunosuke) Akutagawa, Baso, Boris
\nPasternak, Samuel Beckett, (Edgar Allan) Poe, (Anton) Chekov, O.
\nHenry, William Saroyan, Pramoedya (Ananta Toer), Goenawan
\nMohamad, W.S. Rendra, Sutardji Calzoum Bachri, (Umar) Khayam,
\nIqbal even Agatha Christie, to name a few, are always an
\ninteresting read.<\/p>\n
Kid's choice?<\/p>\n
Karl May's adventure, The Human Comedy by William Saroyan,
\nMahabharata. I love those books because they are not just telling
\nstories but also teaching about morality.<\/p>\n
Magazines for a good browse?<\/p>\n
I like magazines with lots of pictures, don't talk too much
\nbut its content is comprehensive and selective. But I also like
\nPenthouse and Playboy.<\/p>\n
Favorite places to pick up a good book?<\/p>\n
I really like buying secondhand books because the important
\nthing for me is not the book but its content. In secondhand
\nplaces, sometimes the books already have scribble in them, with
\ncomments by readers. For me, that's interesting because I know
\nthat I am in touch, in a way, with other readers.<\/p>\n
