'I hope the citizen's lawsuit will work'<\/p>\n
Due to strong indications of the involvement of money politics in
\nthe recent gubernatorial election, activists from non-
\ngovernmental organizations and student organizations plan to file
\na citizens' lawsuit to demand annulment of the election results.
\nSome people share their concerns with The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Meutia Mahardhika, 21, a student taking a non-degree program
\nmajoring in communication at the University of Indonesia. She
\nlives in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta with her family:<\/p>\n
I agree with the idea to take legal action to annul the result
\nof the election as Sutiyoso is accused of using bribes to win
\nreelection. At least, it will clarify to the public the truth
\nbehind the reelection.<\/p>\n
It's reasonable to file the suit as the allegations of money
\npolitics is obvious to the public.<\/p>\n
In fact, there are many irregularities. Something strange has
\nhappened. In many areas in the city, there are banners erected in
\npublic places to give the impression that all Jakartans support
\nhis victory.<\/p>\n
If the plaintiffs win the case, Sutiyoso should step down.<\/p>\n
Personally, I seriously doubt his ability to cope with the
\ncity's problems during his second tenure.<\/p>\n
Lihan, 28, has worked as a private driver for seven years. He
\nlives in Roxy, West Jakarta but comes from Cilacap, Central
\nJakarta, where his wife and only son live:<\/p>\n
I agree with the lawsuit to enforce the law and to find out
\nthe truth related to alleged irregularities in the election.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement here is important to produce an honest and
\nqualified leader. If the leader is accountable and honest, the
\nsubordinates will do their jobs properly.<\/p>\n
Frankly, I don't like Sutiyoso and even any of the other city
\ngovernors. All are the same. Low-income people like me have to
\npay money to corrupt officials when we deal with the
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
Bureaucratic procedures with criminal officials have always
\nburdened the ordinary people with their extortion.<\/p>\n
Lily, an insurance consultant who lives in Ciputat, South
\nJakarta. She has been working in her profession for nine years:<\/p>\n
I think a lawsuit is needed to disclose the truth and to act
\nas a public control mechanism over the city government.<\/p>\n
However, have we considered who then deserves to be the next
\ngovernor in case Sutiyoso steps down? We need a more qualified
\ngovernor to fill the post.<\/p>\n
Otherwise, the situation here will worsen following the
\nfailures during Sutiyoso's previous tenure.<\/p>\n
Well, hopefully the lawsuit will work well for the betterment
\nof the city.<\/p>\n
Aya, not her real name, 24, a sales representative from a
\nprivate company. She lives in Serpong with her family:<\/p>\n
I agree with the lawsuit as long as there is strong evidence
\nto back the case.<\/p>\n
To me, the rumors about the gubernatorial election are almost
\nconvincing because there are indications of corruption during his
\nfirst term.<\/p>\n
The most important thing is to enforce the law seriously in
\nthe city and above all in the country. Otherwise, justice is
\nalways overlooked in favor of the power of money.<\/p>\n
We should learn from our neighboring countries where everyone
\nis equal before the law regardless of their (social) status.<\/p>\n
Therefore, I encourage the (activists) to file a lawsuit
\nregarding the gubernatorial election here. If the legal process
\ncan prove the allegation, then Sutiyoso and the elected vice
\ngovernor should resign.<\/p>\n
