Few celebrities, especially in the fickle Indonesian
\nentertainment world, can rightfully be called a legend in their
\nown time.Rhoma Irama, the king of Indonesia's own folk rock,
\ndangdut, in the 1970s and 1980s, is one of the exceptions. Now
\n54, the former legislator today devotes most of his time to
\nactivities as an Islamic preacher. The father of \"at least
\nthree\", Rhoma opened up in a recent interview with The Jakarta

If you had the choice, what would you be doing now?<\/p>\n
Like always, doing my best for the good of the general public.<\/p>\n
What makes you tick?<\/p>\n
Being of use to others. That is what motivates me to survive
\nand gives me my orientation in life. After all, this life is very
\nshort.<\/p>\n
What traits do you most like about yourself?<\/p>\n
It wouldn't be ethical for me to say, would it? But I'm happy
\nthat I'm healthy, I can work and that I have enough financially,
\nnot too much and not too little.<\/p>\n
And dislike?<\/p>\n
Of course, there are many things. Like I didn't finish my
\nformal schooling, so I don't have a title like my friends. I also
\ncannot manage my finances, I was a bit of a spendthrift up until
\nnow.<\/p>\n
Whom do you most admire?<\/p>\n
The Prophet Mohammad. In music, I like Deep Purple, Lata
\nMangeshkar and Broery (Maranthika). He had a great sense of
\ninterpretation and expressiveness.<\/p>\n
What kind of clothes do you like to wear?<\/p>\n
Those that are either black or white, casual clothes. I don't
\nlike formal.<\/p>\n
What was the last book you read?<\/p>\n
I read a lot, especially the Koran, religious books,
\nencyclopedias, but I cannot name one recent book in particular.<\/p>\n
Do you ever worry about your weight?<\/p>\n
Often. I once reached 75 kg but I am only 160 cms tall. I was
\nvery fat, and I was worried about different things, my health,
\nmobility, my appearance. I went on a strict diet and lost 20 kg.<\/p>\n
What makes you angry?<\/p>\n
When things don't go well during a live concert, especially
\ntechnical matters, like if the sound system is humming. It gets
\nreally irritating.<\/p>\n
What characteristics do you most dislike in others?<\/p>\n
Arrogance and people who are stingy.<\/p>\n
What makes you laugh?<\/p>\n
I think I have a good sense of humor. I like to watch comedy
\nperformances.<\/p>\n
And cry?<\/p>\n
If I sin, or I remember my sins, I sometimes wail and cry.<\/p>\n
What items do you carry with you at all times?<\/p>\n
There is nothing fixed except my prayers. I don't have a
\nbodyguard and, sometimes, I don't even bring money.<\/p>\n
What's your favorite smell?<\/p>\n
Of course, fragrant ones.<\/p>\n
What makes life worth living?<\/p>\n
Like I said earlier, being of use to other people. That is the
\nvalue of life. When we are good to others, we are good to
\nourselves. If we hurt others, we hurt ourselves.<\/p>\n
What is your favorite food?<\/p>\n
Grilled fish, especially ikan baronan, eaten with chili.<\/p>\n
Do you have a favorite song?<\/p>\n
Of my own, Bersatulah (Unite) and Dua Ratus Juta (Two Hundreds
\nMillion). And Indian songs, like Ake Millate. My favorite western
\nsong is Killing Me Softly.<\/p>\n
And movie?<\/p>\n
I don't like going to the movies anymore, ever since I became
\na preacher. It's taboo for me to go into a movie theater. But I
\nused to be a maniac about watching movies, especially action
\nfilms. But I haven't been for 15 years now.<\/p>\n
Would you ever have plastic surgery?<\/p>\n
No, I'll keep myself natural.<\/p>\n
What is the cost of fame?<\/p>\n
You don't have privacy anymore. Sometimes it's like a jail.<\/p>\n
What makes you sad?<\/p>\n
Violence, anarchy, corruption, things which hurt the people.<\/p>\n
When was the last time you were angry?<\/p>\n
I don't remember, but I do get angry, even though I shouldn't.
\nWe can only be angry because of God.<\/p>\n
If the world were going to end in 24 hours, what would you
\ndo?<\/p>\n
Well, I cannot answer that because I don't believe it will end
\nin 24 hours, or even 24 years, not in your or my lifetime. There
\nwould have to be signs. Actually, the signs are beginning to
\nappear, and one of them is that women don't want to have
\nchildren. That's going against destiny. The status of women and
\nmen today is competitive, and it shouldn't be that way. They
\nshould complement each other, not be rivals.<\/p>\n
Can everything be forgiven?<\/p>\n
Almost everything, except someone who commits adultery with
\nanother person's wife.<\/p>\n
How would you like to be remembered?<\/p>\n
