A woman reported to the police last week that she had been robbed
\nby three men inside a taxi owned by a reputable taxi company. The
\nnews has renewed concerns over safety for taxi passengers. The
\nJakarta Post asked residents what precautions they took when
\ntaking a taxi.<\/p>\n
Lia, 30, is an employee of a property consulting firm in
\nCentral Jakarta. She lives with her husband in Ciputat, South
\nJakarta. She takes a taxi almost every day to and from her
\noffice:<\/p>\n
Frankly, I'm afraid that one of these days it will be my turn
\nto be robbed. That's why I'm very careful in choosing a taxi. I'd
\nnever pick taxi company I'm not familiar with even when I'm in a
\nhurry.<\/p>\n
I also try to catch a taxi with a friend. Luckily, I have
\nseveral friends who go the same direction as I do. So I usually
\nshare a cab with two or three of them and we split the fare.
\nBeside being safer, it also works out cheaper for each of us.<\/p>\n
However, if it's late I order a taxi to pick me up, believing
\nthe company will send the best taxi it has.<\/p>\n

I take a taxi when I work late. I haven't had any problems
\nsince I always order a cab by phone. I think an ordered taxi can
\nbe trusted. The taxi usually comes not long after I order it.<\/p>\n
Personally, I'm not that bothered by the recent robberies. I
\ndon't think there is any need to worry about my safety if I take
\nprecautionary measures by taking a brief but careful check of the
\ntaxi's interior before getting into the taxi. It's easy to
\nconfirm the driver's identity in a taxi belonging to a reputable
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
Of course, I always pray for my safety before getting into a
\ntaxi. It makes me feel safe.<\/p>\n
