Hypnotic 'professor' released by police<\/p>\n

The Bogor Police released on Thursday Sawaran Singh, 63, who was
\ndetained on Wednesday for allegedly trying to swindle the rector
\nof Ibnu Khaldun University (UIK) in Bogor.<\/p>\n
"He was released because we do not have enough evidence (to
\npress charges against him)," Bogor Police deputy chief Comr. Asep
\nPriatna said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Singh, an Indian national, not a Pakistani national as
\nreported on Thursday, allegedly attempted to hypnotize rector
\nDidin Saefudin at the UIK campus on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Singh reportedly introduced himself to the rector as a
\nPakistani professor lecturing at Gadjah Mada University in
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Pakistani Ambassador to Indonesia Syed Mustafa Anwer Husain
\nsaid on Thursday that Singh was not a Pakistani national.<\/p>\n
"He (Singh) is an Indian national and the Indian Embassy in
\nJakarta has already arranged his release from Bogor Police
\ncustody," Husain said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
A councillor at the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, T.S. Tirimurti,
\ndeclined to comment on the issue, saying his office had no
\ndetailed information on Singh.<\/p>\n
The Bogor Police confirmed on Thursday that Singh was an
\nIndian national.<\/p>\n
Didin told the police on Wednesday that Singh came to the UIK
\ncampus and told him he would become rich and successful. The
\nrector told officers that he then unwillingly began to follow
\nSingh's suggestions.<\/p>\n
Singh reportedly told Didin he would return to the campus 21
\ndays from Wednesday. The Indian then wrote the figure US$200 on a
\nsheet of paper and handed it to the rector.<\/p>\n
Didin gave Singh Rp 50,000 but the Indian refused the money.
\nSingh then wrote Rp 1 million on the paper.<\/p>\n
Another university official called the police, who arrested
\nSingh on the campus on Jl. Soleh Iskandar.<\/p>\n
Didin said on Thursday he would forgive Singh if he offered an
\napology, but he hoped the police would continue their
\ninvestigation.<\/p>",
