        "content": "<p>Hunger strike ends in RP<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (UPI): Philippine prisoners have ended their two-month<br>\nhunger strike, declaring their protest a victory after the recent<br>\nrelease of 48 fellow inmates they claim were jailed primarily for<br>\npolitical reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Task Force Detainees of the Philippines said yesterday that<br>\nefforts to gain the release of 130 other prisoners it believes<br>\nare held on similar grounds will continue.<\/p>\n<p>The end of the hunger strike comes days after President Fidel<br>\nRamos ordered the release of 19 prisoners. Another 29 inmates<br>\nwere freed after courts, under pressure from protests, expedited<br>\naction on their cases.<\/p>\n<p>Some 119 inmates stopped eating last November to demand the<br>\nfreedom of an estimated 179 political detainees held in jails<br>\nacross the country.<\/p>",
