Hunger in Yahukimo<\/p>\n

After the previous cases of hunger and malnutrition in West
\nand East Nusa Tenggara, there have been reports that at least 50
\npeople have died of hunger and 112 others are suffering from
\nfamine-related diseases in Yahukimo regency, Papua.<\/p>\n
This is tragic because the deaths of so many people were due
\nto hunger rather than ailments such as malaria, which can still
\nbe found in this easternmost province.<\/p>\n
The malnutrition in Papua resulted from economic poverty and
\nthe lack of government attention to the region's infrastructure.
\nPapua is a resource-rich province that makes the biggest
\ncontribution to the state budget.<\/p>\n
Why has Papua remained untouched by the money it contributes
\nto the state budget? In this case, regional leaders -- the
\ngovernor, regents and mayors -- in Papua are most responsible for
\nthe misfortune.<\/p>\n
Instead of spending part of their time in Jakarta, Papuan
\nleaders should execute their main duties by conducting field
\nsurveys to ascertain their people's conditions and observing
\ntheir actual difficulties.<\/p>\n
Papua is still vulnerable to conflict, so this food supply
\nissue must not trigger any friction with the government that can
\nbe exploited by local and foreign parties to serve their
\ninterests.<\/p>\n
