Hundreds strike against rector<\/p>\n
SALATIGA, Central Java (JP): Around 500 students and a number
\nof teachers at the rift-ridden Satya Wacana University staged a
\ndemonstration yesterday to demand the resignation of Rector John
\nJOI Ihalauw.<\/p>\n
\"Go away greedy Rector. Return my democracy,\" the students
\nyelled.<\/p>\n
Student spokesman Adi Prasetyo told The Jakarta Post that they
\nhad previously planned not to hold another demonstration until
\nafter the leaders of a number of churches, which established the
\ncollege, finished their deliberation on the conflict.<\/p>\n
However, the rector's latest decision to fire five biology
\nteachers prompted the strike, he said. Ihalauw previously
\ndismissed dozens of other teachers from various schools.<\/p>\n
Adi said that Ihalauw also appointed a number of junior
\nteachers to replace the dismissed lecturers. \"The quality of the
\njunior teachers is far below the ones dismissed, that's why we
\nrefuse to be taught by them,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The students are also protesting the rector's decision to
\nshorten Law School courses from six months to only ten days.<\/p>\n
\"It's the students again who become the victims of this
\nprolonged conflict,\" said Hanityo Sumitro, an official from the
\nassociation of private colleges.<\/p>\n
Apart from yesterday's and previous demonstrations, the campus
\nhas been deserted following the schools' decision not to conduct
\nany activities.<\/p>\n
The schools of agriculture, engineering, science and
\nmathematics, law, biology, theology and pedagogy have refused to
\nhold classes or admit new students for the new school year. The
\nschool of economics is the only school which has refused to join
