Hundreds protest to support Sultan<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Hundreds of people, including becak (pedicab)
\ndrivers, street vendors, housewives, transvestites, students, and
\nlawyers, demonstrated yesterday in a show of support for the
\npopular traditional monarch Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X to become
\nthe province's next governor.<\/p>\n
Gathering outside the provincial legislature, they castigated
\nthe legislators for failing to formally propose a single
\ncandidate for the governorship.<\/p>\n
They also demanded that the legislature fight to preserve the
\nspecial status accorded the ancient province. Legislator Subagyo
\nWaryadi of the Armed Forces faction -- which supports Sri
\nSultan's candidacy -- met the protesters.<\/p>\n
They criticized the legislators whose deliberations on the
\nsubject had dragged on since last month.<\/p>\n
Separately, Sri Sultan urged the legislators to make haste
\nlest they risk inciting the people's wrath.<\/p>\n
The dominant Golkar faction and the Armed Forces faction have
\nagreed to nominate Sri Sultan for governor, but the United
\nDevelopment Party has nominated its local chairman, Alfian
\nDarmawan.<\/p>\n
The legislature has yet to announce which candidates it is
\nputting forward to the central government. There has been no
