The atmosphere around Malioboro to Yogyakarta\u2019s Zero Kilometre Point\nlooked markedly different on Monday afternoon (15\/6\/2026). Hundreds of\nUniversitas Islam Indonesia (UII) students wearing blue university\njackets packed the area to voice their unease over the state of the\nnation, which they deemed far from well. The crowd, drawn from UII\u2019s\nFaculty of Law and Faculty of Business and Economics, held a protest\ntitled \u2018Towards a Bankrupt Indonesia\u2019. They conducted a long march from\nthe Kotabaru area to the DIY Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) office\nand continued their action at Zero Kilometre Point.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the UII Faculty of Law Student Representative Council,\nMuhammad Radin Nabil Akbar, stated the protest highlighted various\nissues ranging from economic conditions, rising prices of basic\nnecessities, the weakening rupiah exchange rate, to police reform and\nmilitarism in the civilian domain. At least six demands were voiced to\nthe government. \u2018In this action we are bringing six demands, but we are\nfocused on the economy. As our headline suggests, towards a bankrupt\nIndonesia. The first demand called for the total cessation of MBG and the\nKoperasi Desa Merah Putih or KOPDES programme. The second demanded a\nreduction in fuel and staple food prices. The third urged the government\nto improve fiscal policy and state financial governance. The fourth\ndemanded clarity on the reform process of the Indonesian National Police\nand a revision of the Police Law. The fifth called for an end to\nmilitarism in the civilian sphere. The sixth demanded an improvement in\nthe government\u2019s communication patterns and an acknowledgement of all\nits mistakes.<\/p>\n
\u2018One of the problems that frequently arises in the public sphere is\nthe way statements are delivered by state officials, which is often\nperceived as a confrontational communication style, dismissive of\ncriticism, or even blaming other parties for a problem that emerges.\nThis kind of approach is not solution-oriented; it tends to protect the\ninstitution\u2019s image and widen the gap between the government and the\npeople. Therefore, the demand to change the communication pattern to be\nmore open, transparent, and accountable is indeed very urgent,\u2019 he said.\nHe continued that the public does not only need statements that appear\nto calm the situation or a clear party to blame; concrete steps are\nrequired to solve the problems.
