Hundreds of illegal migrants have again attempted to breach Ceuta,\nSpain\u2019s exclave in North Africa. Moroccan authorities were reported to\nhave intercepted the illegal migrants trying to enter Ceuta.<\/p>\n
According to the BBC on Sunday (16\/8\/2026), Moroccan security sources\ncited by Spanish media and the Reuters news agency reported that more\nthan 100 people were stopped while trying to reach the border on the\noutskirts of the town of Fnideq.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred two weeks after around 78,000 migrants arrived\nin the exclave by sea within a matter of hours. That event resulted in\n100 deaths.<\/p>\n
Most of the arrivals have since returned to Morocco. Security in the\narea was subsequently tightened following the surge in illegal migrant\narrivals and indications of plans for a second mass crossing attempt\nthis weekend circulating on social media.<\/p>\n
Security sources said 111 people had been detained in or around\nFnideq, known in Spanish as Castillejos, which lies about 3 km from the\nborder. Most of them came from sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n
Moroccan police, including officers equipped with anti-riot gear,\nwere reported to have used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants\ngathered in the surrounding hills. Earlier this week, the Moroccan\ngovernment said it was monitoring \u2018the circulation of social media posts\nand messages from unknown sources\u2019 calling for a mass crossing on\nSaturday (15\/8) and warned that it would take legal action against both\norganisers and participants.<\/p>\n
Security at the breakwater entrance was reported to be ten times\nstricter than the previous day. Morocco also deployed army personnel,\nfast naval vessels and drones to the border.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Madrid deployed more than 1,500 security personnel to\npatrol the area. Spain has also installed metal fencing and floating\nbarriers following last month\u2019s surge in migrant arrivals.<\/p>\n
The situation had calmed after the crisis erupted in late July, but\nit has triggered tensions among European Union countries that apply open\nborder policies and drawn criticism of the Spanish government. Italy\nsuspended the application of Schengen free movement rules with Spain and\nimposed border checks on arrivals from Spain.<\/p>\n
Italy\u2019s move was supported by Finland and Denmark, while the Czech\nRepublic called for Spain\u2019s temporary suspension from the Schengen area.\nSpain reacted angrily to the stance taken by several European\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stressed that Ceuta is not part\nof the Schengen area.
