        "content": "<p>REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA \u2013 The World Health Organization (WHO) has\ndeclared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and\nUganda as a public health emergency of international concern\n(PHEIC).<\/p>\n<p>In its statement, the WHO stated that the Ebola outbreak caused by\nthe Bundibugyo virus in the two African countries is considered to be at\nrisk of spreading across borders, requiring a coordinated international\nresponse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic\nRepublic of Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of\ninternational concern (PHEIC), but does not yet meet the criteria as a\npandemic,\u201d the WHO statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)\nreported on Friday that at least 13 cases of Ebola have been confirmed\nthrough laboratory tests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including\nfour deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 246 other cases are still unconfirmed, while local\nhealth authorities are also investigating a possible link between the\noutbreak and 65 other deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In Uganda, the government has declared a state of high alert\nfollowing growing concerns about the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO acknowledges that to date, the exact number of people\ninfected and the extent of the outbreak are still not known for\ncertain.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of January, the WHO sent a team of experts to Uganda to\nhelp with the handling of the latest Ebola outbreak. In February, the\norganization announced the start of the first Ebola vaccine trial in\nUganda.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Ugandan Ministry of Health had stated that the Ebola\noutbreak in the country was over at the end of April, the emergence of\nnew cases has prompted international health authorities to increase\nvigilance.<\/p>\n<p>The PHEIC status is an official declaration by the WHO regarding a\nhealth emergency situation that is considered to have a risk of global\nspread and requires rapid international coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the International Health Regulations 2005, all member states\nof the WHO have a legal obligation to respond quickly to the designation\nof PHEIC status.<\/p>",
