Hundreds mourn fireman's tragic death<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of firemen, family and friends wept for
\nDanu Sisworo, the fireman killed Friday in the Harco Mangga Dua
\nfire, at his funeral Saturday at the Karet cemetery, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The ground at the cemetery was wet and slippery after Friday's
\ndownpours, making it difficult for mourners and coffin bearers to
\navoid getting their feet wet.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi Soedirja, the Central Jakarta Mayoralty and
\nthe City Fire Brigade sent wreaths of flowers which were carried
\nby the mourners.<\/p>\n
A procession of two buses, dozens of cars and motorcycles
\nwhich was led by five fire engines attracted great attention as
\nit traveled from Danu's house on Jl. Zaenul Arifin, Ketapang,
\nCentral Jakarta, to the cemetery at 10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n
Two hours before the procession began, Governor Surjadi's wife
\nSri Soenarsih, Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs Idroes
\nand Central Jakarta Major Abdul Kahfi visited Danu's house to pay
\ntheir last respects.<\/p>\n
Soenarsih, Idroes and Kahfi expressed condolences to Danu's
\nwife, Sulariah, and gave her some money.<\/p>\n
Sulariah, who was suffering low blood pressure, did not attend
\nthe funeral.<\/p>\n
On Friday morning, before the fire broke out, Danu accompanied
\nhis wife to a hospital for a checkup.<\/p>\n
\"He got a call and left to join his friends to go to the fire.
\nThat was the last time I saw him,\" Sulariah said.<\/p>\n
Danu was trapped in the fire which gutted the eastern part of
\nthe electronics shopping center. He died of suffocation.<\/p>\n
At least 150 shops and offices in the third and fourth floors
\nof the four-story building were destroyed in the fire.<\/p>\n
City Fire Brigade Chief Suharso, who led the funeral
\nprocession, expressed his deepest condolences in his address.<\/p>\n
\"Danu Sisworo was one of the best officers that we have ever
\nhad. We really miss him,\" Suharso said.<\/p>\n
Danu's eldest son, Wahyu Hadi, told reporters after the
\nfuneral that: \"My father is the best father in the world. He paid
\ngreat attention to us.\"<\/p>\n
Suharso said after the funeral that his office and other
\nagencies were investigating the cause of the blaze.<\/p>\n
On whether he would sue the building's owner for negligence,
\nSuharso said it would be presumptuous to decide that Danu's death
\nwas caused by the owner's negligence.<\/p>\n
But, he said, his office was wondering why the emergency exits
\nhad been locked during the fire. (jun)<\/p>",
