Humpuss cancels project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Humpuss business group owned by former
\npresident Soeharto's son Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra has
\ncanceled a plan to open a 300,000-hectare oil palm plantation in
\nManokwari, Irian Jaya, although the local administration had
\nappropriated land for the project.<\/p>\n
According to Manokwari Regent Mulyono, the company decided to
\ncancel the project because the land available was only 35,000
\nhectares, which it considered inadequate for supporting a large
\nplantation.<\/p>\n
"The local people have given away their land for free to
\nsupport the plantation project, but now the investment plan has
\nbeen canceled," Mulyono was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Mulyono added that the local administration would assist
\ndomestic and foreign investors interested in developing
\nbusinesses in his regency.<\/p>\n
He said several other companies were developing oil palm and
\ncacao plantations in the area but he declined to give further
