        "content": "<p>Humanoid robots are projected to revolutionise car production with\ntheir ability to handle tedious work without breaks or benefits, but\ntrials of their use in automotive plants currently show that the robots\u2019\nperformance is not yet efficient.<\/p>\n<p>As quoted in a Carscoops report on Monday, BMW acknowledged that the\nhumanoid robot being trialled at its plant in Spartanburg, South\nCarolina, United States, is still slower than human workers.<\/p>\n<p>The robot made by Figure AI has been tested at BMW\u2019s Spartanburg\nplant to move components from containers to trolleys. The robot can\nwalk, pick up parts, and pull trolleys.<\/p>\n<p>However, BMW Vice President of Logistics Ulrich Wieland told The New\nYork Times that the humanoid robot\u2019s work is still slower than that of\nhumans.<\/p>\n<p>Trials of humanoid robots in car factory operations are also being\nconducted by Mercedes-Benz, which is testing the operation of a humanoid\nrobot made by Apptronik to handle and sort components.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai, the South Korean vehicle manufacturer that owns Boston\nDynamics, also plans to use its robots to help organise parts for\nworkers on the assembly line.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has greater ambitions for its Optimus humanoid robot, with a\nvision for deployment that extends beyond car assembly operations.<\/p>\n<p>General Motors (GM) is experimenting with robots equipped with arms\nand hands, but without human-like walking capability, to support car\nfactory operations.<\/p>\n<p>GM Chief Product Officer Sterling Anderson previously stated that the\nfunction of hands in handling factory work is clear, but \u201cthe usefulness\nof legs is not yet clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The efficiency and effectiveness of using humanoid robots in car\nfactory operations remains a subject of debate.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts Institute of Technology Industrial Performance Center\nExecutive Director Ben Armstrong said humanoid robots could turn out to\nbe a \u201cmulti-million dollar solution to a hundred-dollar problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told The New York Times that simpler automation could accomplish\nmany repetitive tasks at a lower cost than humanoid robots.<\/p>",
