        "content": "<p>Humanoid robot sprints to victory in Beijing, beating the human\nhalf-marathon world record<\/p>\n<p>But the race wasn\u2019t without hiccups - one robot fell flat at the\nstart line while another bumped into a barrier.<\/p>\n<p>BEIJING: A humanoid robot that won a half-marathon race for robots in\nBeijing on Sunday (Apr 19) ran faster than the human world record in a\nshow of China\u2019s technological leaps.<\/p>\n<p>The winner from Honor, a Chinese smartphone maker, completed the 21km\nrace in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, according to a WeChat post by the\nBeijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as Beijing\nE-Town, where the race kicked off.<\/p>\n<p>That was faster than the human world record holder, Uganda\u2019s Jacob\nKiplimo, who finished the same distance in about 57 minutes in\nMarch.<\/p>\n<p>The performance by the robot marked a significant step forward from\nlast year\u2019s inaugural race, during which the winning robot finished in 2\nhours, 40 minutes and 42 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of this year\u2019s event was almost five times bigger than last\nyear\u2019s, with more than 100 teams joining the competition, including five\nfrom overseas.<\/p>\n<p>But the race wasn\u2019t without hiccups - one robot fell flat at the\nstart line while another bumped into a barrier.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing E-Town said about 40 per cent of the robots navigated the\ncourse autonomously, while the others were remotely controlled.<\/p>\n<p>State broadcaster CCTV said a robot served as a traffic officer to\ndirect the participants with it arm gestures and voice.<\/p>\n<p>In China, technology has evolved into an area of competition with the\nUS with national security implications. Beijing\u2019s latest five-year plan\nvows to \u201ctarget the frontiers of science and technology\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speeding up the development of products like humanoid robots and\ntheir applications is part of the 2026-2030 plan for the world\u2019s\nsecond-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p>London-based technology research and advisory group Omdia recently\nranked three Chinese companies - AGIBOT, Unitree Robotics and UBTech\nRobotics Corp - as the only first-tier vendors in its global assessment\nfor shipment numbers for general-purpose embodied intelligent\nrobots.<\/p>\n<p>They all shipped more than 1,000 units of the robots last year, with\nthe first two companies shipping more than 5,000 units, the report\nsaid.<\/p>",
