Humanitarian pause useless<\/p>\n
The agreement to extend the humanitarian pause in Aceh is a
\ncomplete waste of time. Does the government not realize that it
\nhas taken a wrong step by signing this agreement in the first
\nplace, which so far has given the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) the
\nopportunity to misuse the pause and cause more suffering to the
\ncommon people, creating additional problems for the law enforcing
\nagencies?<\/p>\n
I recall what the President said in a nationwide broadcast on
\nnational television, \"...if people express their will to be
\nindependent, let them do so, because that is just talk. But if
\nthey organize themselves, make up a time schedule of actions and
\narm themselves, then they must be arrested and the government is
\nserious\". Have there been any serious steps taken by the
\ngovernment against the separatist movement so far? I don't think
\nI have seen any.<\/p>\n
But is not the only statement of the President about the cry
\nfor independence, which will be nipped in the bud, so to speak.
\nThe Papua case is another one. He allowed a congress to be held,
\ndonated one billion rupiah and allowed the Papuans to hoist their
\n\"national flag\".<\/p>\n
What is the government doing about these violations? Nothing.
\nHas GAM stopped their terrorist activities, their killing and
\nmurdering of members of the military? The pause has given them
\nthe chance to continue their terrorist activities, to disguise
\nthemselves as unknown armed gangs and so refuse to take
\nresponsibility for those activities.<\/p>\n
Everything is misused by GAM who try to scare the civilian
\ngovernment and the military by killing, bombing, wrecking
\ngovernment buildings and setting them on fire and so on. I am
\nconvinced that our government is capable of taking resolute
\nsteps. After the displeasure shown by the UN over the killing of
\nthree UNHCR workers, the government was capable of sending one
\nbattalion of troops the very next day.<\/p>\n
The humanitarian pause was useless from the very beginning and
\nmany organizations have expressed their disagreement. The
\ngovernment should know that, especially after \"unknown armed
\ngangs\" got so much freedom to terrorize the people.<\/p>\n
Let us hope and pray that the government takes a serious
\nsecond look at this humanitarian pause and starts acting like any
\ngovernment should do against law violators.<\/p>\n
