JAKARTA \u2014 Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai invited media\nrepresentatives to the kick-off and launch of the Media Press and Human\nRights Civilisation Development Programme in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11\nMarch 2026. However, Pigai proved reluctant when journalists questioned\nhim during the doorstop session.<\/p>\n
The event was intended as a strategic initiative to promote human\nrights understanding through media involvement and engagement.\nThroughout the programme, speakers discussed human rights and the role\nof the media.<\/p>\n
After the informational session concluded, media personnel prepared\nfor the doorstop interview session. However, before the doorstop began,\nPigai signalled that questions should be limited to the event itself. He\nreasoned that media should focus on covering the activities.<\/p>\n
As a result, Pigai only agreed to provide comments about the event.\nIn doing so, the former Komnas HAM commissioner effectively closed off\nmedia space for questions on other issues. Notably, Pigai\u2019s action\ncontradicted the very purpose of the event he had organised.<\/p>\n
\u201cMedia is one of the most important fourth pillar of democracy.\nDemocracy exists within human rights. Therefore, we want media to be the\nmost important pillar of democracy in the context of national\ndevelopment,\u201d Pigai said regarding the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cMedia must be able to campaign for positive aspects of national\ndevelopment, especially human rights development in civil, political,\neconomic, social, and cultural spheres. But media must also uncover\nfacts about social pathologies.
