Human rights implementation<\/p>\n

Amid the political chaos and economic mess gripping the entire
\ncountry, a tragedy befell Muslims in Ambon on June 14, 2001 as
\nthey were subjected to a shooting spree by members of the joint
\nbattalion of the Indonesian Military (TNI). This brutal massacre
\nclaimed over 20 lives, some from the Laskar Jihad, and left four
\npersons missing and 36 seriously wounded.<\/p>\n
Worse still, as widely reported in the mass media, these
\nsoldiers of the joint battalion, who were supposed to take action
\nagainst the separatist movement which had declared the
\nindependence of the Republic of South Maluku (RMS), also damaged
\npublic facilities such as a polyclinic, vehicles and a radio
\nstation.<\/p>\n
Ironically, this brutality and other similar occurrences show
\nthat when Muslims are repressed, local institutions claiming to
\nbe the champions of human rights as well as international
\ninstitutions like the Office of the United Nations High
\nCommissioner of Human Rights, do not even say a word. These
\ninstitutions will shout out loud if mishap befalls non-Muslims.<\/p>\n
This is just a small piece of evidence of double standards in
\nhuman rights. The same thing is also clearly seen in the
\ninvestigations into the Tanjung Priok case and similar cases in
\nAtambua, Doulos and Maluku. It starkly demonstrates that human
\nrights are implemented according to the wishes of the
\npowers-that-be, or that the implementation of human rights are
\ninseparable from political, economic and ideological interests.<\/p>\n
It is very obvious that what imperialist countries and their
\nstooges have been bragging about -- upholding human rights -- is
\nmere wishful thinking.<\/p>\n
