Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head\nof the Ministry of Defense\u2019s Information Bureau, said the Italian-built\ncarrier is inherently capable of supporting disaster management, with a\nfew adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>A number of facilities on the Garibaldi are readily available to\nassist in firefighting efforts. \u201cThese include health facilities, a\nspacious cargo hold for materials, and a helipad that can support the\nmobility of personnel, medical personnel, logistical support, and\nevacuation,\u201d he said in a written statement, quoted on Wednesday,\nSeptember 16, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Adjustments to Be Made for Garibaldi Carrier<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian government will make several adjustments to the vessel\nto support the operational demand of the Indonesian Navy. \u201cThis includes\nmodifying several rooms to expand the capacity of healthcare services,\u201d\nRico said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the Garibaldi will also be equipped with necessary\nequipment to facilitate the mobility and distribution of materials. With\nthese modifications, he said, the vessel will not only serve a function\nin the defense sector but also in supporting Indonesia\u2019s humanitarian\noperations and disaster management. \u201cEspecially to reach archipelagic\nregions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The adjustments to Garibaldi are deemed necessary to help the vessel\nadapt to changing environmental conditions. One aspect concerns the air\nconditioning system, which must be adjusted to the country\u2019s tropical\nclimate. \u201cThe system will also be modified to accommodate healthcare\nneeds, including patients requiring special conditions or treatment,\u201d\nRico said.<\/p>\n<p>The Garibaldi aircraft carrier is currently en route to Indonesian\nwaters. It is expected to arrive in Indonesia in the third week of\nSeptember 2026. Previously, Prabowo announced plans to convert the\nGaribaldi into a helicopter base.<\/p>\n<p>According to the head of state, the ship can accommodate 10\nmedium-class helicopters such as the Black Hawk and MI-17.
