Vaping can dry and irritate the vocal cords, causing hoarseness, a dry throat and vocal fatigue; research also suggests it may affect vocal-cord movement. A doctor says stopping vaping is the main step towards recovery, although structural changes may not fully reverse, and advises seeking medical assessment if hoarseness lasts more than two to three weeks.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The use of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, can
cause irritation and inflammation of the vocal cords, leading to
hoarseness, a dry throat and vocal fatigue.

Sohaib Imtiaz, MD, chief medical officer at People Inc. Health Group,
said vape aerosol contains several substances, including propylene
glycol, glycerine, nicotine and flavourings, which can dry out and
irritate the vocal-cord lining.

In an interview with Health on Tuesday (20 October), Imtiaz explained
that the vocal cords are among the first parts of the body exposed to
vape aerosol when a person uses the device.

According to Imtiaz, several studies have also indicated that vaping
may affect vocal-cord movement. A 2025 study of young adults who vaped
daily found that their vocal cords closed more slowly and vibrated less
regularly than those of people who did not vape.

The effects of vaping on the voice also came under scrutiny after
singer and actress Selena Gomez revealed that her habit of using
nicotine vapes had changed her voice.

Imtiaz said quitting vaping is the main step towards helping the
vocal cords recover. However, recovery is not always complete.

Irritation, dryness and inflammation generally improve after someone
stops vaping. But if exposure has caused structural changes to the vocal
cords, the quality of the voice may not return to what it was
before.

Imtiaz advised seeing a doctor if hoarseness lasts for more than two
to three weeks, especially if symptoms persist after quitting vaping. An
ear, nose and throat specialist can examine the vocal cords and
determine what treatment is needed.
",
