What are the causes of the rupiah's weak position? The answers
\nare so varied that it is very difficult for the monetary
\nauthorities to arrive at a diagnosis which would permit them to
\nmake a decision.<\/p>\n
One of the causes of the weakness is the attitude of
\ncapitalists whose nationalism is fading. They only think of
\npersonal gains without considering the impact on the country's
\neconomy. They dominate the greater part of the country's economy
\nand their behavior is imitated by some government officials.<\/p>\n
The purchase of dollars takes place in cities only. The
\nmajority of the population living a hard life in villages and at
\nthe foot of mountains are not in a position to acquire dollars.<\/p>\n
Although there has been no survey so far, those who have
\ncontributed to the weakening of the rupiah are the company
\ntycoons with conglomerate businesses, companies that speculate in
\ncurrencies, businessmen, legislators, bureaucrats, bank
\nofficials, state-owned company employees, speculators and even
\nhousewives.<\/p>\n
In order to help the rupiah, we should create a movement for a
\nnational consciousness. Those who have bought dollars should sell
\nthem. Those who have dollar savings abroad should withdraw them
\nand convert the money to make a deposit in rupiah.<\/p>\n
If we realize that nationalism can prevail over individual
\ninterests, we should dare to make sacrifices. If the rupiah
\nregained its strength, everybody would benefit from it.<\/p>\n
