The government, through the Coordinating Ministry for Food, is\nintensifying efforts to achieve national protein self-sufficiency. This\nmove follows the government\u2019s success in achieving self-sufficiency for\ncarbohydrate-rich foods.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan stated that the scope\nof food needs is very broad, with the public requiring enhanced\nnutritional content in every food product, from carbohydrates to\nprotein. The government has already achieved self-sufficiency in rice\nand corn, which are rich in carbohydrates. Now, it is focusing on\nboosting production of fish, shrimp, eggs, and chicken.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year we are focusing on protein self-sufficiency: fish, shrimp,\neggs, chicken. We are also looking at milk and beef, but that is not\neasy. We are focusing on chicken and fish first,\u201d he said during CNBC\nIndonesia\u2019s Economic Update 2026 on Tuesday (23\/6\/2026).<\/p>\n
Zulhas noted that the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP)\nis also intensifying efforts in line with President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s\ndirectives. To that end, KKP will develop \u2018Red and White Fishermen\u2019s\nVillages\u2019 (Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih). The villages are designed to\nboost fishermen\u2019s welfare while strengthening the national fisheries\nsupply chain.<\/p>\n
According to Zulhas, the fishermen\u2019s villages address classic\nproblems often faced by fishermen across various regions. These include\ndifficulties in selling their catch at competitive prices due to\nmiddlemen and a lack of storage facilities, which affects the quality of\ntheir catch.<\/p>\n
Therefore, in 2026 the government is targeting the construction of\napproximately 20,000 Red and White Fishermen\u2019s Villages across\nIndonesia. These villages will be equipped with facilities to support\nfishermen\u2019s needs, such as Red and White Fishermen\u2019s Cooperatives, fish\nauction halls, ice factories, cold storage warehouses, and distribution\nand marketing networks for their catch.<\/p>\n
Consequently, fishermen will have a stronger bargaining position in\nthe market. If they are still unable to sell their catch at competitive\nprices, the Red and White Fishermen\u2019s Cooperative will act as an\nofftaker. \u201cIt will be purchased by the Red and White Fishermen\u2019s\nCooperative.
