        "content": "<p>Houses in Menteng to make way for new roads<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): At least 181 houses in Pegangsaan subdistrict<br>\nand another 63 homes in Menteng area, both in Menteng district,<br>\nCentral Jakarta, will be demolished by local authorities for the<br>\nconstruction of two streets 500 meters long.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by the Central Jakarta Mayoralty and made<br>\navailable to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday quoted Assistant to<br>\nCentral Jakarta Mayor for administration affairs, Agus Salim<br>\nUtud, as saying that the compensation for the land is not yet<br>\ndecided.<\/p>\n<p>\"The matter has been discussed by the city administration, but<br>\nthe amount has not been agreed. I'm told that the administration<br>\nis still listing the properties and calculating the values,\" Agus<br>\nwas quoted as saying in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The new roads will connect Jl. Tambak and Jl. Bonang in<br>\nPegangsaan and Jl. Menteng Tenggulun and Jl. Menteng Jaya in<br>\nMenteng.<\/p>\n<p>The project, scheduled to be completed sometime next year, was<br>\ndisclosed to local residents in a meeting with Agus on Monday<br>\nevening, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The initial marking of the two projects will begin this week,<br>\nthe release stated without mentioning whether or not the people<br>\nagreed with the plan.<\/p>\n<p>In the meeting, Agus informed the affected residents and their<br>\nfamilies that the streets would provide more direct routes for<br>\nlocal residents, motorists and fire engines.<\/p>\n<p>The area is home to many poor families.<\/p>\n<p>The planned street in Pegangsaan will be 13 meters wide, while<br>\nthe other one in Menteng will have a width of six meters, the<br>\nstatement said.<\/p>\n<p>The planned project also will include extension of the<br>\nexisting narrow streets in the two areas.<\/p>\n<p>Sagala, project manager for the Pegangsaan street, later to be<br>\ncalled Jl. Tembus Bonang-Tambak, told residents in the Monday<br>\nmeeting that his group and the administration would not give any<br>\nkind of compensation to the locals over their remaining tiny<br>\nplots of land which could no longer be used, the statement said.<br>\n(06)<\/p>",
