Houses in Menteng to make way for new roads<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 181 houses in Pegangsaan subdistrict
\nand another 63 homes in Menteng area, both in Menteng district,
\nCentral Jakarta, will be demolished by local authorities for the
\nconstruction of two streets 500 meters long.<\/p>\n
A statement issued by the Central Jakarta Mayoralty and made
\navailable to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday quoted Assistant to
\nCentral Jakarta Mayor for administration affairs, Agus Salim
\nUtud, as saying that the compensation for the land is not yet
\ndecided.<\/p>\n
\"The matter has been discussed by the city administration, but
\nthe amount has not been agreed. I'm told that the administration
\nis still listing the properties and calculating the values,\" Agus
\nwas quoted as saying in the statement.<\/p>\n
The new roads will connect Jl. Tambak and Jl. Bonang in
\nPegangsaan and Jl. Menteng Tenggulun and Jl. Menteng Jaya in
\nMenteng.<\/p>\n
The project, scheduled to be completed sometime next year, was
\ndisclosed to local residents in a meeting with Agus on Monday
\nevening, according to the statement.<\/p>\n
The initial marking of the two projects will begin this week,
\nthe release stated without mentioning whether or not the people
\nagreed with the plan.<\/p>\n
In the meeting, Agus informed the affected residents and their
\nfamilies that the streets would provide more direct routes for
\nlocal residents, motorists and fire engines.<\/p>\n
The area is home to many poor families.<\/p>\n
The planned street in Pegangsaan will be 13 meters wide, while
\nthe other one in Menteng will have a width of six meters, the
\nstatement said.<\/p>\n
The planned project also will include extension of the
\nexisting narrow streets in the two areas.<\/p>\n
Sagala, project manager for the Pegangsaan street, later to be
\ncalled Jl. Tembus Bonang-Tambak, told residents in the Monday
\nmeeting that his group and the administration would not give any
\nkind of compensation to the locals over their remaining tiny
\nplots of land which could no longer be used, the statement said.
