        "content": "<p>House wants more powerful BPOM<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The House of Representatives demanded on Thursday<br>\nthat the government shift the authority to issue food and drug<br>\nlicenses to the Food and Drug Control Body (BPOM) from the<br>\nMinistry of Health.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of House Commission VII on health and population<br>\nPosma Tobing said overlapping authorities between the two<br>\ngovernment institution had caused confusion and unnecessary<br>\nexpenses on the part of food and drug producers.<\/p>\n<p>Posma said in a hearing with BPOM here some pharmaceutical<br>\ncompanies had registered their products with both institutions<br>\ndue to the confusion.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The problem lies in the unclear legal authority,&quot; Posma<br>\nTobing said.<\/p>\n<p>Citing an example, he said there are overlapping authorities<br>\nbetween the two institutions regarding pharmaceutical and health<br>\nequipment.<\/p>\n<p>Government Regulation No. 72\/1998 says the Ministry of Health<br>\nis the only authorized institution to issue licenses for<br>\ncompanies to distribute the equipment, but Presidential Decree<br>\nNo. 103\/2001 stipulates that issuance of licenses and the control<br>\nover distribution of products of pharmaceutical companies lies in<br>\nthe hands of BPOM. -- JP<\/p>",
