House urged to stop road construction<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Some 20 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) grouped
\nin the Indonesian NGO Network for Forest Conservation urged the
\nHouse of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday to stop the
\nconstruction of a road in Aceh that would damage forest areas.<\/p>\n
They alleged that the construction of Ladia Galaska road,
\nwhich cuts through protected forest in Aceh, would affect
\necosystem around the Mount Leuser. The road designed to connect
\nwest and east coastal areas in Aceh would damage the conserved
\narea in Mount Leuser.<\/p>\n
The ecosystem is home to nearly 300,000 species, including
\nendangered species such as the Sumatran rhinos, orangutan,
\nSumatran tiger, and elephant.<\/p>\n
The NGOs include the Indonesian Forum for the Environment
\n(Walhi), Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association
\n(PBHI), Consortium for Indonesian Forest Conservation
\n(Konphalindo), Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI), JARI,
\nIndonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL), and Committee for
\nthe Conservation of Aceh Environment (KOMPALA).<\/p>\n
Three Cabinet ministers -- Kwik Kian Gie, Minister of National
\nDevelopment Planning, Nabiel Makarim, State Minister of the
\nEnvironment and Prakosa, Minister of Forestry -- have warned the
\nAceh provincial administration of strong opposition to the
