        "content": "<p>House to deliberate chemical weapons ban<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A bill on the ratification of the Convention on<br>\nthe Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and<br>\nUse of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction was submitted<br>\nyesterday to the House of Representatives for deliberation.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas said that when passed,<br>\nIndonesia would become the 111th party to the convention and the<br>\nfifth in Southeast Asia after Brunei, Laos, the Philippines and<br>\nSingapore.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting the bill to a House plenary session, Alatas said it<br>\nwas in the interest of Indonesia to ratify the document.<\/p>\n<p>\"Indonesia is not a country which owns chemical weapons and<br>\ndoes not have the intention to develop any. Indonesia's decision<br>\nto become party to the convention is founded by its Constitution<br>\nobliging it to take part in maintaining international peace and<br>\nsecurity,\" Alatas said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia would also gain other \"practical and tactical<br>\nbenefits\" from ratifying the convention, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, which signed the convention in 1997 in Paris, is<br>\none of 59 countries that have still to ratify it, Alatas said.<br>\n(aan)<\/p>",
