House studies possibility of amending postal law<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives is studying the
\npossibility of amending the country's postal law in order to
\nallow private companies to perform postal services.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the House's Commission IV on transportation,
\ntourism, post and telecommunications, Ferdinand P.D. Lengkey,
\nsaid here yesterday that the members of the commission were
\ncurrently considering the option.<\/p>\n
\"If we find that the amendment is necessary, we will take the
\ninitiative rights to do so,\" he said when inspecting PT Pos
\nIndonesia's headquarters in Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta,
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
With such rights, the House would not have to wait for a
\nproposal from the Ministry of Tourism, Post and
\nTelecommunications to amend the postal law, he added.<\/p>\n
Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave said
\nlast week that Postal Law No. 6\/1984, which gave the sole rights
\nto PT Pos Indonesia to provide postal services, needed an
\namendment to allow private companies to provide postal services.<\/p>\n
\"This may be the time for private companies to enter into the
\npostal business,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The minister indicated that the state-owned PT Pos Indonesia
\ncould only handle 10 percent of postal service opportunities in
\nthe country and the remaining 90 percent of potential postal
\nservices had remained untapped.<\/p>\n
Such an amendment would terminate the postal monopoly of Pos
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Pos Indonesia's marketing director,
\nSoemitro Roestam, said yesterday that his company was ready to
\ncompete with private firms if its monopoly was terminated.<\/p>\n
He said that Pos Indonesia would launch new services and
\nimprove its public services.<\/p>\n
Among the new services would be \"priority delivery\", which
\nwould provide priority delivery services for special mail like
\ncredit cards, he added.<\/p>\n
\"We will also launch next month an electronic money transfer
\nservice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said Pos Indonesia was also on the way to setting up a
\nsubsidiary, likely to be called Admail Plus, which would focus on
\nthe delivery and mailing of advertising brochures and other
\nprinted promotional materials.<\/p>\n
\"We plan to set up the subsidiary with the Australian postal
\nservice of Australia, but domestic companies may also
\nparticipate,\" Soemitro said, adding that his company was waiting
\nfor approval from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of
\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications. (icn)<\/p>",
