House set to announce new
\nBank Indonesia governor<\/p>\n

The House of Representatives is scheduled to select the new
\ngovernor of Bank Indonesia on Tuesday, following a \"fit-and-
\nproper test\" of the three candidates that lasted until late on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Max Muin, chairman of House Commission IX for financial
\naffairs, which conducted the test, said the commission was
\ncommitted to selecting the new governor before a planned plenary
\nmeeting of the House on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"We will wrap up the process tonight (Monday night). Following
\nthe fit-and-proper test of all the candidates, we are going to
\nhave an internal meeting to determine the winner,\" Max said,
\nadding that the meeting would start at about 10 p.m.<\/p>\n
He brushed aside the possibility of any delays, saying: \"The
\ntarget is for us (the commission) to present one name at the
\nplenary session tomorrow (Tuesday). So we should have the
\nwinner's name before that. We will work through until dawn if we
\nhave to.\"<\/p>\n
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the screening
\nof the three candidates -- Miranda S. Goeltom, Cyrillius Harinowo
\nand Burhanuddin Abdullah.<\/p>\n
The names of the candidates were submitted to the House by
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri in February. Miranda is
\ncurrently a deputy governor of the central bank, and the other
\ntwo candidates have both served in senior positions with the
\nbank.<\/p>\n
The winning candidate will replace Sjahril Sabirin, whose
\ntenure ends on May 17. Sjahril, who replaced Sudradjat
\nDjiwandono, has held the post since 1998.<\/p>\n
It was unclear as of late on Monday who would take over the
\nhighest post in the country's monetary authority. But it has been
\nwidely expected that the selection process will be marked by
\npolitical wrangling between factions on the commission.<\/p>\n
Anyone who witnessed the fit-and-proper tests would likely
\nagree that they were a mere formality and unlikely to play a
\ncrucial role in determining the commission's choice.<\/p>\n
Miranda, for example, received more than 120 questions but was
\nonly given about 40 minutes to answer the questions during a six-
\nhour hearing.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, of the three nominees Miranda is seen as the
\nfront-runner because she reportedly has the backing of Megawati's
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, the country's largest
\nparty.<\/p>\n
Miranda, however, will be challenged by Burhanuddin, a former
\nchief economics minister in the previous administration who
\nappears to have the backing of the Islamic-based factions.<\/p>\n
The final choice could depend on which way the Golkar Party,
\nthe second largest party in the country, leans.<\/p>\n
Cyrillius, despite being highly respected as a professional,
\nseems to have little chance because of a lack of political
\nsupport.<\/p>\n
But with Golkar's votes hanging in the balance, any of the
\nthree nominees has a chance of leading the central bank.<\/p>",
