        "content": "<p>House proposes 20 names for vacant justice posts<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives in its plenary<br>\nmeeting yesterday proposed 20 candidates for the ten vacant<br>\njustice posts at the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The posts have been vacant since eight justices retired last<br>\nyear, and two of the Supreme Court deputy chief justices were<br>\nelected leaders of the institution last month.<\/p>\n<p>Former deputy chief justice for military tribunal Sarwata and<br>\nformer deputy chief justice of the state administrative court Th.<br>\nKetut Suraputra were appointed Chief Justice and Vice Chief<br>\nJustice respectively. They replaced Soerjono and M. Djaelani.<\/p>\n<p>The list of candidates drawn up by the House for submission to<br>\nPresident Soeharto includes the current secretary general of the<br>\nSupreme Court, Mangatas Nasution.<\/p>\n<p>The other candidates are Abdul Kadir Roeslan, Achmad Kowi AS,<br>\nAchmad Tayibu, Darwin Lubis, Djufri Ramli, Emin Aminah Achdiat,<br>\nH.P. Pangabean, I Nengah Wedastra, Marnis Kahar, M. Saleh Rasyid,<br>\nParman Suparman, Pranowo, R. Sunu Wahadi, Soekirno, Soenardi<br>\nPadang, Sudarno, Suwawi, Syamsuhadi, and Zainal Abidin Abubakar.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the plenary meeting, legislator Handjojo Putro -<br>\nwho was involved in drawing up the list -- expressed hopes that<br>\nthe President would select the best candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;May all those appointed later be those who are really<br>\nprofessional and mentally-prepared for the challenging post,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He said all the candidates were career-judges, &quot;though some of<br>\nthem have not been practicing judges for some time.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Also at the plenary meeting, the government filed nine bills<br>\nto the House for deliberation. The newly-submitted bills include<br>\none on statistics, which some people say is anti-science because<br>\nits intention is to make the Central Bureau of Statistics the<br>\nsole agency authorized to approve research proposals in the<br>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I hope the House will be able to finish deliberating those<br>\nbills before the day of the election campaign begins,&quot; Deputy<br>\nHouse Speaker Soetedjo, who presided at yesterday&apos;s plenary<br>\nmeeting, said jokingly.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has scheduled next May 29 as the general election<br>\nday.
