House probes disappearances<\/p>\n
SIGLI, Aceh: A fact-finding team of the House of
\nRepresentatives arrived in Pidie regency on Tuesday to start its
\ninvestigation into reported disappearance of hundreds of people
\nover the past decade.<\/p>\n
Led by Hari Sabarno of the Armed Forces (ABRI) faction, the
\nteam heard testimony from residents at the local legislative
\ncouncil. The council has reportedly received 440 reports of
\nmissing people and torture by ABRI officers.<\/p>\n
The team also includes Taryo Tarmadi, former West Java
\nregional military chief. The hearing was held behind closed
\ndoors, Antara said.<\/p>\n
Later in the day, the team visited a traditional house used as
\na base of the Army's special force (Kopassus) in Billie Aron
\nvillage, Glumpang Dua district. It is said to be the site where
\nABRI officers interrogated people they accused of involvement in
\nthe separatist movement.<\/p>\n
The team was scheduled yesterday to continue its investigation
\ntrip to Lhokseumawe in North Aceh.<\/p>",
