House passes bill on foundations<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A plenary session of the House of
\nRepresentatives passed the bill on institutional foundations on
\nWednesday which, among other things, increases the public's role
\nin supervising foundations and provides a new legal basis for the
\nestablishment of new foundations.<\/p>\n
Outgoing Minister for Justice and Human Rights Marsillam
\nSimanjuntak (seen in the picture being congratulated by
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle legislator Sutardjo
\nSuryoguritno) told the hearing that the law was designed to give
\nthe public clear information on foundations that function as
\nlegal institutions to carry out activities in various fields,
\nsuch as social, religious and humanitarian fields.<\/p>\n
The newly passed law also stipulated the mechanism to
\nestablish foundations and the merger of foundations, and the role
\nof the public to supervise foundations by requiring foundation
\nexecutives to announce summaries of their annual reports in the
\nstate gazette, Marsillam said.<\/p>\n
The requirement to issue annual reports was in line with the
\nprinciple of public disclosure and accountability for
\nfoundations, he added.<\/p>\n
The law also firmly separated the authority, function and task
\nof a foundation's board of patrons, executive board and
\nsupervisory board, he said, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
The government submitted the bill to the House for
\ndeliberation on May 30, 2000. The Wednesday session was led by
