        "content": "<p>House makes more empty bill promises<\/p>\n<p>Kurniawan Hari<br>\nThe Jakarta Post<br>\nJakarta<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives (DPR) admitted defeat on Saturday <br>\nin its race against time to complete its deliberations on a top <br>\npriority bill in the current sitting, which will end on Dec. 13.<\/p>\n<p>Legislators could only finish three of the more than a dozen <br>\nbills it had promised to \"try hard\" to complete by the end of the <br>\nseason, which began on Nov. 20.<\/p>\n<p>\"Deliberation on the other bills will resume in the next <br>\nsession,\" said Shodiq, a staff member with a bureau in the <br>\nsecretariat-general on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The three bills that have been passed into law concern state <br>\ndefense, the National Police and revisions to the state budget.<\/p>\n<p>When opening the current session on Nov. 20, House Speaker <br>\nAkbar Tandjung promised that legislators would also discuss bills <br>\non money laundering, electricity and investment as a top <br>\npriority.<\/p>\n<p>\"The bill on money laundering is very important because it is <br>\npart of international crime, which has a wide impact,\" Akbar <br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar had demanded legislators work day and night in order to <br>\ncomplete their unfinished deliberations on various bills, in a <br>\nsession that lasted only 18 days.<\/p>\n<p>At least 16 bills are being deliberated during the 18-day <br>\nperiod. They include, among others, one on an anticorruption <br>\ncommission, property rights, electricity, the protection of <br>\nworkers and state finance.<\/p>\n<p>Other bills expected to be passed into law early next year are <br>\non the protection of children, the presidency, banking credit and <br>\nthe national education system.<\/p>\n<p>An important \"achievement\" was the appointment of Comr. Gen. <br>\nDa'i Bachtiar as National Police chief. Da'i was made a general <br>\nimmediately after being sworn in by President Megawati <br>\nSoekarnoputri.<\/p>",
