House makes more empty bill promises<\/p>\n

The House of Representatives (DPR) admitted defeat on Saturday
\nin its race against time to complete its deliberations on a top
\npriority bill in the current sitting, which will end on Dec. 13.<\/p>\n
Legislators could only finish three of the more than a dozen
\nbills it had promised to \"try hard\" to complete by the end of the
\nseason, which began on Nov. 20.<\/p>\n
\"Deliberation on the other bills will resume in the next
\nsession,\" said Shodiq, a staff member with a bureau in the
\nsecretariat-general on Friday.<\/p>\n
The three bills that have been passed into law concern state
\ndefense, the National Police and revisions to the state budget.<\/p>\n
When opening the current session on Nov. 20, House Speaker
\nAkbar Tandjung promised that legislators would also discuss bills
\non money laundering, electricity and investment as a top
\npriority.<\/p>\n
\"The bill on money laundering is very important because it is
\npart of international crime, which has a wide impact,\" Akbar
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Akbar had demanded legislators work day and night in order to
\ncomplete their unfinished deliberations on various bills, in a
\nsession that lasted only 18 days.<\/p>\n
At least 16 bills are being deliberated during the 18-day
\nperiod. They include, among others, one on an anticorruption
\ncommission, property rights, electricity, the protection of
\nworkers and state finance.<\/p>\n
Other bills expected to be passed into law early next year are
\non the protection of children, the presidency, banking credit and
\nthe national education system.<\/p>\n
An important \"achievement\" was the appointment of Comr. Gen.
\nDa'i Bachtiar as National Police chief. Da'i was made a general
\nimmediately after being sworn in by President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri.<\/p>",
