House fails to detail scam at complex<\/p>\n

After 10 months of investigation into alleged irregularities in
\nthe management of Bung Karno sports complex, a House committee on
\nFriday announced the results of the inquiry without figures
\ndetailing the amount of losses to the state.<\/p>\n
The committee completed its investigation report by simply
\nissuing some recommendations.<\/p>\n
"We are still calculating the amount of state losses resulting
\nfrom the management irregularities. It is amounting to billions
\nof rupiah," said committee chairman Effendy Choirie of the
\nNational Awakening Party (PKB).<\/p>\n
The management falls under the supervision of the state
\nsecretariat.<\/p>\n
Committee members Happy Bone Zulkarnaen and Pedy Tandawuya of
\nGolkar and Karmani of the United Development Party (PPP) also
\nattended the presentation of the investigation results.<\/p>\n
Happy said the committee would not disclose the amount of
\nstate losses for fear that it would shock the public due to the
\nenormity of the amount.<\/p>\n
Choirie added the problems related to the Bung Karno sports
\ncomplex were very complicated.<\/p>\n
Several figures, including businesspeople Pontjo Sutowo and
\nSiti Hediati "Titik" Prabowo and State Secretary Bambang Kesowo
\nhave been summoned to the House for questioning regarding their
\nalleged involvement in the irregularities.<\/p>\n
The Bung Karno sport complex was built in 1958, on 279
\nhectares of state land. The area was designed as a green belt for
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
However, the progress of the nation's economic development has
\nmade the sports complex evolve into a multipurpose area.
\nGovernment buildings, shopping malls, amusement centers and
\nhotels were built around the complex.<\/p>\n
The committee called for a legal audit, financial audit and
\nmanagement audit to commence no later than three months after the
\nrecommendation was announced to the public.<\/p>\n
"The legal audit can be carried out by an independent auditor,
\nwhile the financial audit should be conducted by the Supreme
\nAudit Agency (BPK)," Choirie said.<\/p>\n
The committee also suggested that the management board of Bung
\nKarno sports complex report its financial balance sheet to the
\nfinance ministry.<\/p>\n
Choirie said all buildings in the sports complex, including
\nsenior high school SMUN 24, a health clinic, the ministry of
\nnational education, the ministry of forestry and the now defunct
\nministry of youth affairs and sports, should be returned to the
\nmanagement board of Bung Karno sports complex.<\/p>\n
He said the land where these offices were built was not
\nallocated for such usage.<\/p>\n
After finishing its inquiry into the Bung Karno sports
\ncomplex, the legislators will investigate alleged irregularities
\nin the management of the Kemayoran fairground, which is also a
\nstate asset that falls under the state secretariat.<\/p>",
