House of Representatives Commission XII Chairman Bambang Patijaya is\nencouraging a shift in Indonesia\u2019s waste management from a\ncollect-and-dispose pattern to a system that holds economic value,\nthereby benefiting the community. \u201cOur waste management is still\nproject-based; it has not been built as a complete system,\u201d he said\nduring a Waste Reduction Technical Guidance event in Pangkalpinang,\nBangka Belitung, on Wednesday, according to a statement received in\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The legislator, who focuses on energy and environmental affairs,\nstated that the global environmental crisis demands a change in\nperspective towards waste. He noted that unmanaged waste piles\ncontribute to greenhouse gas emissions, while rising global temperatures\nare linked to an increase in hydrometeorological disasters.<\/p>\n
He assessed that current waste governance is not yet well integrated,\npartly because waste that has been sorted by households is often mixed\nagain during transport to disposal sites. Bambang pointed out that\nseveral final disposal sites still use an open dumping system, which\nproduces methane emissions and pollutes the environment.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he is pushing for the application of the reduce, reuse,\nand recycle principles. He believes plastic waste has economic value if\nsorted and processed correctly. During the occasion, Bambang also handed\nover 15 three-wheeled waste transport motorcycles and composter units, a\ncollaboration with the Ministry of Environment, to strengthen\ncommunity-based waste management. \u201cWe want to increase community\nparticipation in solving the waste problem.
