        "content": "<p>Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chair of House Commission X Esti\nWijayati has committed to urging the Ministry of Higher Education,\nScience, and Technology to conduct a thorough evaluation of new student\nadmission policies and the national education funding scheme. The\nstatement was made by Esti during a Focus Group Discussion initiated by\nUniversitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) with leaders of private\nuniversities across the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Monday (7\/6).\nEsti acknowledged that concerns regarding the imbalance in the new\nstudent admissions system have been voiced for a long time. According to\nher, the prolonged independent admission routes at state universities\noften kill the opportunity for private universities to recruit students\nearlier and in sufficient numbers. \u201cCommission X has formed a working\ncommittee to find facts on the ground regarding the problems faced by\nprivate universities. We will put pressure on the government to evaluate\nnew student admissions so that private universities have fair space and\ncertainty of timing,\u201d she said. Regarding the funding scheme, Esti\nsupported the demands of private university leaders concerning the need\nto increase the quota and adjust the amount of the Kartu Indonesia\nPintar Kuliah (KIP-K) assistance. She highlighted the reduction in aid\nvalue for top-tier universities from Rp8 million to Rp4.5 million per\nsemester, which is considered burdensome for educational institutions.\n\u201cWe strongly agree that the number should be increased and the amount\nadjusted. It is impossible for a top university to run optimally with\naid of only Rp4.5 million per semester. We will fight for this demand\nfirmly and decisively,\u201d she stressed. On the same occasion, UMY Vice\nRector for Education and Student Affairs Prof.\u00a0Zuly Qodir emphasised the\nneed to review several Ministerial Regulations related to education\ngovernance. He highlighted three crucial issues: the new student\nadmissions system, fairness in scholarship distribution, and the\ncomplexity of regulations for opening new study programmes. Zuly\nexplained that private universities are now burdened with the obligation\nto accept students from frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T)\nregions without adequate funding subsidies from the state. This\ncondition is seen as a policy imbalance, considering that state\nuniversities receive much greater fiscal support. \u201cAdditionally, we\nhighlight the disparity in the ease of opening new study programmes.\nState Universities with Legal Entity status can open programmes with a\nvery flexible process, while private universities must meet very strict\nand complicated requirements. This should be equalised to create a\nhealthy competitive climate,\u201d he explained. Zuly expressed hope that the\ngovernment can find a middle ground, such as allowing private\nuniversities to collect the shortfall in costs from KIP-K recipient\nstudents that is not covered by state subsidies, so that the financial\nburden on campuses does not continue to swell. The FGD was attended by\nleaders from several major universities in Yogyakarta, including UAD,\nUII, UNISA, UMBY, Janabadra University, Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta,\nand Sanata Dharma University.
