House Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR\nRI) has requested that the Ministry of Transportation and PT Kereta Api\nIndonesia (KAI) carry out a comprehensive evaluation of all railway\nlevel crossings in Indonesia to enhance safety for road users and train\njourneys.<\/p>\n
Danang Wicaksana Sulistya, Head of the Commission V Faction Group\nfrom the Gerindra Party, stated that the initial step required is an\ninventory of all level crossing points to ascertain actual field\nconditions and the risk level of each location. He said the inventory\nresults must form the basis for drafting long-term policy regarding the\nhandling of level crossings across various regions.<\/p>\n
He assessed that for crossings with high traffic density and accident\nrisk, the government could consider constructing infrastructure such as\nflyovers or underpasses to eliminate potential conflicts between train\njourneys and road users. Meanwhile, for crossings still using the\nat-grade system, Danang requested various improvement measures,\nincluding an evaluation of the elevation condition of the rails and road\nsurface so as not to endanger road users, particularly\nmotorcyclists.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne thing that needs attention is the elevation condition of the\nrailway tracks relative to the road surface. Do not let a height\ndifference that is too large endanger road users, especially two-wheeled\nvehicles. Crossings must be designed to remain safe and comfortable for\nthe public to traverse,\u201d he said. He requested an evaluation of the\ncompleteness of signage, early warning systems, crossing gates,\nlighting, and the sight distance for motorists approaching the railway\nline.<\/p>\n
According to Danang, safety must be the top priority in managing\nrailway crossings, necessitating synergy between the central government,\nregional governments, the Ministry of Transportation, PT KAI, and other\nstakeholders. \u201cThe ultimate goal is to create crossings that are safer,\nmore comfortable, and capable of minimising accident risk. This\nevaluation must be carried out comprehensively and continuously as part\nof efforts to improve national transportation safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The call aligns with President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s instruction to\nregulate level crossings following a train accident incident in East\nBekasi. Following up on this directive, the Ministry of Transportation\nand PT KAI have committed to accelerating the regulation of level\ncrossings in various areas to improve train journey safety.
