        "content": "<p>House back police tough stance<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Legislators from the House's defense and security<br>\ncommission have backed the tough stance adopted by police against<br>\nmilitant student activists during the recent antigovernment<br>\nprotests.<\/p>\n<p>The legislators gave their support to the police during a<br>\nhearing with National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim Ambong, commission chairman, said that the legislators<br>\ncould understand the action taken by the police in dealing with<br>\nthe protesters as their actions could incite people to take to<br>\nthe streets and thus jeopardize public order and security.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of students were arrested last week after staging<br>\nstreet rallies near the residence of President Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri on Jl. Teuku Umar in Central Jakarta. They were<br>\nreleased a few hours later.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, however, a number of legislators expressed<br>\nconcern over the arrests.<\/p>\n<p>Police chief Da'i Bachtiar called on protesters not to be<br>\nanarchic and to report to the police three days before staging a<br>\nrally.  --JP<\/p>",
