House asked to divulge attendance<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Frustrated by fellow legislators' poor participation
\nat meetings in the House of Representatives (DPR), Deputy House
\nSpeaker Tosari Widjaja urged the House Secretariat on Thursday to
\ndisclose the attendance list to the public.<\/p>\n
Tosari, from the United Development Party (PPP), said the move
\nwas designed to enable the public to differentiate between inept
\nand professional legislators.<\/p>\n
\"The revelation will avoid creating the impression that all
\nHouse members do not do their job,\" Tosari said after
\nindefinitely delaying a meeting of the House steering committee
\n(Bamus), which is in charge of drawing up the schedule for
\ndeliberation on bills.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which was supposed to discuss the date for the
\nendorsement of the draft state budget, was called off due to poor
\nattendance by committee members.<\/p>\n
Of the 76 Bamus members, only 36 signed the attendance list
\nand only 20 were present.<\/p>\n
Tosari said that his team always evaluated the attendance of
\nHouse members at the end of every meeting. However, the
\nevaluation had never been published.<\/p>\n
He said he hoped publication of the House attendance list
\nwould help improve legislators' performance. -- JP<\/p>",
