        "content": "<p>House approves law on international relations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The four factions of the House of<br>\nRepresentatives (DPR) approved on Tuesday a bill on international<br>\nrelations and called on the government to follow up with<br>\nimplementation regulations, Antara said.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman Y.B. Wiyanjono of the Indonesian Democratic Party<br>\n(PDI) faction told a plenary session the new law was expected to<br>\nenable the government to provide better legal protection and<br>\nsecurity to Indonesian citizens living or working abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the government representative, ad interim foreign<br>\nminister Feisal Tanjung, said the law would link all parties<br>\nincluding the government and non-governmental organizations in<br>\nsuch a way so that uniform a stance on foreign policy could be<br>\nestablished.<\/p>\n<p>Feisal also rejected a proposal by PDI and United Development<br>\nParty (PPP) factions that the appointment of Indonesian<br>\nambassadors and counselors should be approved by the House.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Feisal, basically the government will take<br>\ninto account House proposals regarding those positions as not<br>\nonly representing the president, but also the country.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;However, the 1945 Constitution stresses that ambassadorial<br>\nand counselor appointments are the prerogative of the president,&quot;<br>\nFeisal said before the plenary session chaired by the head of the<br>\nmilitary faction, Lt. Gen. Hari Sabarno.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the sending of peacekeeping forces\/missions from<br>\nIndonesia, a declaration of war or peace and participation in<br>\ninternational agreements, the government has agreed to consult<br>\nthe House first.<\/p>\n<p>Feisal on Tuesday took Ali Alatas&apos; place as the latter was in<br>\nSingapore for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting on 23 July and<br>\n24 July, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on July 26 and July<br>\n27.<\/p>",
